RESOURCES FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC-MEDICAL (SAFE) EXAMS

Statewide efforts are being made to ensure that victims of sexual assault put their health and well-being first, and equipping medical facilities with the resources specific to sexual assault examinations.

SAFE Exam Compliance Training & Tools Available

Hospitals are now required by law to provide Sexual Assault Forensic-Medical Exams (SAFE Exams) to victims who seek treatment, but do not want to report to law enforcement officials. If the victim chooses not to report the crime, samples must be stored for at least 90 days to allow her or him to consider filing a delayed report. To support compliance with these new legal mandates, Kentucky’s Sexual Assault Response Team Advisory Committee is providing training and technical assistance throughout the Commonwealth.

·SAFE Exam Toolkit Compliance Guide includes sample policies and procedures, forms, and related resources. [Please destroy any “Advance Copy” you received, as this final version includes several changes.]

SAFE Exam Compliance Training addresses fundamental medical and legal issues for hospital leaders, especially Emergency Department Managers, Chief Nursing Officers, Risk Managers, and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners. Nurses will receive 2.5 continuing education credits, at no cost.

Training requests may be made by contacting melissa.edlin@kasap.org or (fax) 502-562-6198, or call 502-689-2744 for more information.

Contracting Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) as a result of sexual violence is an overwhelming fear for many victims.
